26 Uterine Fibroids successfully operated and removed from 34-year-old Woman via Robot-aided Surgery at Fortis Noida
Noida: In a rare reported case, doctors at Fortis Noida successfully operated and removed 26 fibroids from the uterus of a 34-year-old woman, who was suffering from heavy menstrual bleeding and abdominal pain since last two months. The team of doctors led by Dr Anjana Singh, Director & HOD, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Fortis Hospital, Noida successfully conducted an advanced robot-aided surgery and removed the uterine fibroid. The surgery lasted for 4 hours, and the patient was discharged in 6 days in a stable condition.
Upon admission at Fortis Noida, the patient was suffering from extreme abdominal pain. An MRI was conducted, which revealed an enlarged uterus of 28 cm in size, with 26 fibroids inside the uterus. Normal Size of Uterus is 7 cms. The fibroids measured 6-10 cms each. In view of findings of the report, the woman was planned for a Robotic Myomectomy (a minimally invasive, laparoscopic surgery to remove uterine fibroids). During the surgery, it was discovered that the woman’s entire uterus was filled with fibroids. With the advanced robotic assisted approach, the fibroids were taken out one by one, and the holes left in the uterus were stitched up precisely.
Giving details of the case, Dr Anjana Singh, Director & HOD, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Fortis Hospital, Noida said, “Uterine fibroids are slow-growing benign tumors, but such large number of fibroids in a uterus occur only in a fraction of women especially, African women. The procedure was extremely challenging, as we had to surgically remove all the fibroids and yet save the uterus in its perfect shape as the patient was unmarried hoping to plan a pregnancy in future. We carefully planned the surgery using MRI and 3D ultrasound to map the fibroids. We increased the patient's blood count with iron pills and had extra blood ready for the operation. The patient’s uterus was very large, making the surgery challenging. However, using robotic assistance, we were able to remove the fibroids with precision, minimize blood loss, and restore the uterus to a near-normal shape. Had the patient not been operated on immediately, the fibroids would have increased massively in size and numbers. Additionally, without robotic surgery, she would have faced a large scar and risked losing her uterus. Fortunately, robotic-assisted minimal access surgery has proven to be a significant benefit for both surgeons and patients. With the 10x magnified vision of the robotic system, we were clearly able to identify the adjoining anatomy, and the wristed instrument of the Robotic system helps out to do precise dissection in these difficult areas and preserve the adjoining structures. This led to a safe and precise surgery and lesser post-operative complications for the patient,” Dr Singh added.
Mohit Singh, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Noida said, “It was a challenging case and, in such cases, it is very important to consult a multi-specialty hospital which is well equipped with the best medical facilities. We have a comprehensive robot-aided surgical program at Fortis Noida, with the specialized team of doctors, which is capable of to handle such cases with precision and care.”
