Alarming Rise in Gynecological Cancer Cases: Now a Leading or a big Cause of Concern
Noida – In a startling revelation, data from The Lancet highlights a significant shift in global health trends, cancer now tops cardiac diseases as the leading cause of death worldwide. The surge in gynecological cancer cases, especially in India, is particularly alarming. Delhi, the capital of the country, stands out as the epicenter of cancer cases, closely trailed by Mumbai.
Approximately five lakh women worldwide develop gynecological cancer annually and India alone sees over one lakh new cases diagnosed. In India, cervical cancer poses a significant threat, with 122,844 women being diagnosed each year and 67,477 deaths reported due to the disease. The incidence of cervical cancer is particularly high among women aged 55-59, with HPV prevalence among patients ranging from 87.8% to 96.67%. Among women aged 15 to 44 years, cervical cancer ranks as the second most common cancer.
Gynecological cancers now make up a quarter of all cancers detected in women. Uterine cancer leads to around 11,000 fatalities annually, while ovarian cancer is often identified in later stages (75% in stage 3 or 4) due to lack of awareness and subtle symptoms. According to the National Cancer Registry Program (NCRP) under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the risk of breast and other gynecological cancers impacting 1 in 6 women was reported in 2020. It is estimated that there will be 712,758 cancer cases among females in India, with an incidence rate of 103.6 per 100,000 individuals.
Addressing this pressing issue, Fortis Hospital, Noida, has discreetly launched a specialized Gynae Cancer Clinic aimed at combating this silent epidemic. While the facility's opening is a significant development, the focus remains on the alarming rise in gynae cancer cases and the need for proactive healthcare measures.
Dr. Priya Bansal, Consultant – Gynae Oncosurgery at Fortis Hospital Noida, emphasized the critical importance of early detection: "The high mortality rate associated with gynae cancers is largely due to late-stage diagnosis. Our clinic is dedicated to providing comprehensive care, from early detection to advanced treatment options, to improve survival rates."
The clinic offers state-of-the-art services, including expert consultations, advanced treatment options like robotic surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, as well as comprehensive cancer screening packages. These screenings are crucial for early diagnosis, particularly for ovarian and cervical cancers, where early intervention can significantly impact outcomes.
Mr. Mohit Singh, Zonal Director at Fortis Hospital Noida, highlighted the initiative's broader goal: "We aim to raise awareness about the importance of regular screenings and early consultation. Our specialized clinic is not just a treatment center but a beacon of hope for women, encouraging them to prioritize their health."
