ApolloMedics Hospital Achieves Remarkable Milestone in Medical Technology, Reconstructs Patient's Jawbone Using 3D Printing
Achieving a significant medical milestone, ApolloMedics Super Specialty Hospitals in Lucknow not only successfully treated a tumor in the jawbone, ameloblastoma mandible, but also reconstructed the patient's jawbone using 3D printing. With the help of Artificial Intelligence a 3D implant was prepared and was later adjusted according to the size of jaw. Following this successful surgery, a 50-year-old patient is now leading a normal life. This surgical procedure was used for the first time in Uttar Pradesh Private Sector for Reconstruction of Mandible.
The patient visited ApolloMedics Hospital with complaints of pain in the jaw and difficulty in eating. After thorough examination and scans, the Surgical Oncology Team, under the guidance of Dr. Satish determined the necessity to remove the entire left part of the jaw and joint. The patient was concerned about the function and cosmesis following the removal of such a large and important part of Face.
Reconstructing such a defect, keeping the functionality and cosmesis, is a challenging task. The Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery Consultants Dr. Nikhil Puri and Dr. Ashish Ukey played a vital role in this reconstructive surgery, reconstructing the mandible back to normal.
Plastic Surgery Team counseled the patient and his family on various options for jawbone reconstruction, including information on Patient-Specific 3D implants. In this implant surgery, a personalized jawbone was prepared based on computer-assisted 3D technology, an exact replica of the part to be removed, ensuring accuracy up to a millimeter. The Surgical Oncology Team decided the levels of cuts on the mandible and based on these cuts, the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Team designed the new Mandible using computer assisted 3D technology matching the shape and size of the mandible to be removed. The whole surgery was planned on computer assisted scans and reproduced exactly on the OT table with accuracy as precise as a milimetre. The whole process took about a month. After the successful completion of this surgery, the patient is now free from pain and able to eat and speak normally with the maintenance of normal facial contours.
