Traditional Food Habits and Changing Lifestyles: The Main Causes of Increasing Weight

Ludhiana: Obesity has emerged as a serious health concern in Punjab, similar to cancer. The state ranks among the top in the country for obesity prevalence. According to studies, nearly 40% of adults in Punjab are obese, with 36% of adults in Ludhiana being affected by the condition. The primary reasons behind this rising trend are traditional dietary habits and evolving lifestyles. The local diet is rich in dairy products like milk, butter, and ghee, which, although highly nutritious, are also high in fat and calories, contributing to excessive weight gain. This, in turn, is leading to an increase in heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, fatty liver, and infertility.

To mark World Obesity Day, MASSH Prolife Hospital organized a press conference at Hotel Hyatt Regency, Ludhiana, to discuss obesity and weight management. During the event, Dr. Harpreet Singh Jolly provided insights into various aspects of weight management.

Dr. Jolly highlighted that Ludhiana is facing a severe obesity crisis, with 36% of its adult population affected, and women being more prone to obesity than men. Obesity is relatively lower in the 18-34 age group but significantly higher among individuals aged 35-54. This issue is not just about physical appearance but also a major contributor to chronic illnesses like heart disease and diabetes. However, with proper knowledge, timely treatment, and discipline, obesity can be controlled.

He further explained that urbanization and lifestyle changes have led to a decrease in physical activity, worsening the obesity problem. The growing preference for processed foods high in refined carbohydrates and low in nutrition is another key factor. Additionally, economic progress and shifting dietary habits have increased the consumption of high-calorie foods. This trend is particularly evident in affluent families, where heavier, calorie-dense meals are becoming more common.

Innovative and Effective Obesity Management Techniques

The event also introduced several new and effective weight-loss techniques. GLP-1 agonists (such as semaglutide) have shown promising results in obesity treatment, although their effects may reduce once the medication is discontinued. Additionally, non-surgical techniques like intragastric balloons and endoscopic plication have proven effective in weight reduction.

However, bariatric surgery remains the most effective and long-term solution for obesity. This includes procedures like sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and mini gastric bypass (MGB/OAGB). Studies show that bariatric surgery not only helps with significant weight loss but also alleviates severe conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea.

Following the press conference, an interactive Q&A session was held where attendees got their queries answered by Dr. Jolly himself. Common myths about obesity were debunked, and special sessions were conducted to address patients' concerns.

Patient Testimonial: Life Transformed Through Bariatric Surgery

One of the attendees, Gurmeet Singh (55 years old), shared his inspiring journey. Weighing 140 kg with a BMI of 48, he suffered from high blood pressure, diabetes, venous insufficiency, and depression. For eight years, he relied on a BiPAP machine to sleep and struggled with a poor quality of life. However, after undergoing MGB bariatric surgery, his weight reduced to 82 kg. He completely reversed his diabetes and hypertension, overcame sleep apnea, and regained confidence, leading a far more active and fulfilling life.
